An Index of 1970s Fawcett Regency Romance Novels

Fawcett Crest, an imprint of Fawcett Publications, published a line of traditional Regency romance paperback novels from 1974 to 1998.  This huge number of books can generally be separated into three main eras:

1. The "Pre-Coventry" books (1974-1979)
. These books had a uniform white-border cover design with the phrase "A Regency Romance" usually appearing directly above the cover illustration, as shown in the example at right. (Not all of the novels took place during the Regency era, however, so the phrase "A Historical Romance," "A Georgian Romance," "A Victorian Romance" or "An Edwardian Romance" were sometimes used instead, depending on the setting of the story.) Most of the books have a small crown symbol on the cover, which had been used earlier (in 1973) on the contemporary romance novels published by the Fawcett imprint Hamilton House
These "pre-Coventry" books did not have a series number, aside from the publisher's serial number for the book, which makes collecting them a bit challenging. A few of the books had multiple printings between 1974 and 1979, and can look nearly identical except for having a different serial number and higher cover price (more on that later). This line ended in October 1979, when it was replaced by the Coventry Romances line.

2. The "Coventry Romances" line (1979-1982)
. There were 206 books in this series, numbered #1 to #206, from November 1979 to August 1982. In addition, the final few Coventry books, published in September 1982, were not numbered. Most Coventry books had "A Regency Love Story" printed on the cover below the title (or "A Georgian Love Story," etc., depending on the story's setting). The Coventry line had the same cover design as the "pre-Coventry" books, with white borders and the crown symbol, and had many of the same authors.  "Pre-Coventry" books that were reprinted during the Coventry line's existence were branded as "A Coventry Classic." You can find an index of the Coventry line at The NoneSuch site (archived) and on FictionDB.
A January 1982 New York Times article quoted an industry insider calling the Coventry line "a disaster" in terms of sales. "We threw just a ton of money into it. We spent well over $1 million marketing the line, we promoted it heavily on television, we bought a lot of display racks that weren't well received by the trade, and we began issuing six books a month, compared with the two we had been publishing.'' Fawcett was purchased by Ballantine in 1982 and the series was replaced by Fawcett's "A Regency Romance" line, which is described below.

3. The "Post-Coventry" books (1982-1998)
. After Coventry ended, Fawcett's Regency line returned at the end of 1982 to an unnumbered system, unified only by a similar cover design and "A Regency Romance" heading. Instead of a white border, the covers had a color border, as shown in the example at right (which happens to be a "pre-Coventry" novel reissued in the new format). Eventually the color border was discarded but a thin frame remained to border the illustration.  By 1992, the cover design became less consistent; the thin frame was discarded and there was more variation in title placement and lettering style. "A Regency Romance" remained as a brand but became less prominent on the covers. At the end of 1998, Fawcett cancelled their traditional Regency line. Since these "post-Coventry" books (like the "pre-Coventry" books) did not have series numbering (unlike the Coventry line), collecting them can be difficult -- even more difficult than the "pre-Coventry" books actually, since they ran for many more years and had a cover design that evolved over time.  At some point in the (far, far) future, I would like to attempt to compile an index of them, since I have not been able to find such an index online.  (If I do ever index them on my blog, I will likely split them into two posts, one for each decade.)

This current blog post, however, is all about the first Fawcett Regency line mentioned above -- the books published from 1974 to 1979.  Below you will find my attempt at an index of them.  Only books published between February 1974 and October 1979 are shown below, all of which have the line's uniform white border.

Before we begin, though, I want to provide some historical context and background for the launch of the Fawcett Regency line in 1974 -- since this stuff didn't occur in a vacuum.

Harlequin was the most successful publisher of category romance novels, adding the iconic Harlequin Presents line (which also had uniform white-bordered covers) to their monthly offerings in 1973. These were strictly contemporary romance novels, however, taking place in the present. (Harlequin Historical would not debut until 1977.)  Other publishers jumped on the bandwagon with their own category romance lines, including Dell's Candlelight Romance, which by 1970 had begun adding Gothic and suspense stories to the line, and by 1972 Regency romances. (The first Regency in the Candlelight line was book #97, Heiress of Wainscotte by Betty Hale Hyatt, published in September 1972.) As the popularity of Gothic romances declined during this period, some authors transitioned from Gothics to historicals. Ace Books, who had been "first in Gothics" (as their covers proclaimed) began a Regency line in 1973.

Ace had published paperback editions of the novels of Georgette Heyer (1902-1974), considered the exemplar of the Regency Romance genre. Pyramid Books was regularly publishing historical novels by the prolific Barbara Cartland (1901-2000). In 1973, Bantam began their own monthly line of Barbara Cartland novels, with numbers on their covers (which encouraged readers to collect them all).  In 1974, Signet Books began reprinting Regency novels by Clare Darcy (1914-1978) which would eventually lead to the Signet Regency Romance line that outlasted all the rest, finally ending in 2006.

The Flame and the Flower by Kathleen E. Woodiwiss (1939-2007) was published by Avon Books in April 1972, which became a massive bestseller and inspired more hefty historical romances like it. (In my own review of the book, I wrote: "I think that a large part of the book's appeal for its original audience was that it has an intense focus on the relationship of the couple, Brandon and Heather. A category romance would have a similar laserlike focus, but Woodiwiss' book is triple the length, giving an epic treatment to their romantic bond."

Another difference was that such epic-length historicals had a higher heat level than most category romance novels, including the traditional Regency lines offered by Fawcett, Signet, etc. and the novels of Barbara Cartland. Instead of passion and sensuality, the Regency novels recreated a more refined time for modern readers, with attention paid to societal rules, amusing conversations and antiquated jargon. This restraint allowed the story's romance to blossom without explicitly sensual scenes.  Although the sexual revolution of the early 1970s had resulted in more daring content in the rest of media, the popularity of the traditional Regency romance in that decade perhaps suggests a reaction against that development.  These readers didn't want to read about sex; they wanted to read an old-fashioned romance.

In the early 1970s, Fawcett was publishing romance-adjacent historical and suspense novels by writers like Taylor Caldwell, Dorothy Eden, Victoria Holt, Susan Howatch, Norah Lofts, Jean Plaidy (a.k.a. Victoria Holt), Claire Rayner, Anya Seton, Mary Stewart and Phyllis A. Whitney.  The author's name was sometimes the selling-point with such novels, her name alone functioning as a brand, but with category romances it was the publisher itself and the line's uniform cover design that lured repeat customers, regardless of who wrote the novel. Nonetheless, certain authors within a category line would become reader favorites due to the quality of their work. The Fawcett Regency line's most prominent author, Sylvia Thorpe, would eventually have her name fashioned into a stylized logo as a further selling-point to readers.

In the September 3, 1979 issue of Publishers Weekly, an article about the impending launch of the Coventry Romances line explained how its direct predecessor -- Fawcett's "pre-Coventry" line (my name for it) -- came to be:

"During a London trip back in the 1970s, Fawcett vice-president and publishing director Leona Nevler picked up some British Regency romances and thought they might be fun to publish. Among the books she brought back was 'Romantic Lady' by Sylvia Thorpe, released by Fawcett in February 1974. By April 1977, these period romances (Regency, Edwardian, etc.) were a regular part of Fawcett's monthly publishing schedule.

"A now-familiar package design emerged for all these period romances, including lush colored paintings framed on the bottom half of the front cover. Nevler's description to PW of the jacket -- 'a pretty package with the right feel; it doesn't have lusty images and it portrays a quality look' -- was certainly borne out in all the subsequent market research.  The only front-cover change under Coventry Romances will be prominent display of the new imprint.

"Since the publication of the first titles, Nevler told PW, these romances have sold 15-million copies. The printing of each title has averaged 120,000 to 125,000 copies; returns have been very low."

Numerous writers appeared in this "pre-Coventry" line, and I have provided a separate alphabetical list of the authors near the end of this post.  By my count, there was a total of 123 novels that were part of the "pre-Coventry" line, written by 36 different writers.

The line's launch author Sylvia Thorpe appeared the most often, with 20 novels. Mary Ann Gibbs was the second-most prevalent, with 9 novels. She was followed by Joan Smith with 8 novels. (Smith's first novel, An Affair of the Heart, appeared here, and Fawcett would continue to publish her Regency novels regularly for the next 20 years.)  Claudette Williams, was the fourth most prolific author, with 7 novels published in the line. The remaining authors had between one and six novels appearing in the line.

Some of the authors wrote under pen-names, such as Janet Louise Roberts (using the pseudonym Rebecca Danton), Brenda Castle (as Rachelle Edwards), Mary Linn Roby (as Georgina Grey) and David Guy Compton (as Frances Lynch). A few of the line's authors are still writing today, such as Claudette Williams (as Claudy Conn) and Maggie MacKeever; those links are to their current Facebook pages.

Most of the writers who had books in the "pre-Coventry" line would also have novels published in the subsequent Coventry Romances line -- including Lois Cole Taylor (as Caroline Arnett) who died in 1979 before the line's debut, but whose novel Christina was published as book #65 in 1980. (The five novels that she wrote for the "pre-Coventry" line also had the heroine's name as their titles.)  Back in the 1930s, she had been instrumental in the publication of Gone With the Wind by her friend Margaret Mitchell.

Although many of the books were reprints of novels that had been previously published in hardcover (including U.K. publishers like Robert Hale and Hurst & Blackett), there were also several "paperback originals" in the line, such as the aforementioned Joan Smith (who nonetheless also had a few of her hardcover novels reprinted here).  The previous publisher of the book would usually be acknowledged on the copyright page inside the books, and I have included that information in the index below when known.

I have called this a "line," although it may be useful to define our terms. A publisher's romance line would usually have a name and often its own clear numbering (book #1, book #2, etc.) for readers to follow. The "pre-Coventry" line has neither of those things. But like a category romance line, it has a uniform cover design and even an identifying symbol (the small crown on the covers). In a sense these books were single-title historicals that were simply marketed by the publisher using a shared cover design due to their similar subject matter, which eventually led to a recognized category line (Coventry Romances).

Muddling matters is that the Coventry line was treated as much like an imprint as a line, with the books said to be published by Fawcett Coventry rather than Fawcett Crest itself. In the November 13, 1981 issue of Publishers Weekly, Fawcett Crest executive editor Barbara Dicks said (somewhat inaccurately), "We began Coventry Romances as part of the Crest line in 1977," which more properly ought to be described as the Crest imprint, not line. "First we published one a month, then two a month, mostly Regencies, but also Victorians, Georgians and Edwardians." The writer of the article then notes that "Readers were eager enough for the fare to convince Fawcett to break them out and form a separate line."

So, it may be that the slow development of the line caused it to seem less like an actual line initially, which might explain Dicks' saying that it originated in 1977, due to its increased production by then.  The first three books were released in early 1974, one per month, but the fourth book wasn't released until later that year.  The line was revived in May 1975, adding the familiar crown symbol to the covers (absent from the 1974 books), with one or two published each month. Although a precise release schedule is not available, production eventually increased to three books per month by April 1977, all with the same cover design as before. For my money, that makes it a category line even without having its own distinct name and numbering.

As noted earlier, the "pre-Coventry" books were not numbered, aside from the company's serial numbers for their releases.  In the early 1970s Fawcett Crest's serial numbers were a 4-digit number preceded by a letter such as M, P or Q.  In 1976, the letter system was dropped, replaced by a 5-digit number (with an additional 6th digit at the end, so that the "book number" on the cover would match the last six numbers in the book's ISBN). At the very end of this post, I have arranged all the books in the "pre-Coventry" line in numerical order for the purpose of providing a (somewhat) chronological list of them.

Some of the books in the "pre-Coventry" line had multiple printings during this 1974-1979 period. If the new printing had a higher cover price than its previous printing, then it would be assigned a new serial number.  So, for example, Romantic Lady by Sylvia Thorpe (the first book in the line) was released in Feb. 1974 as book number M2047 with a cover price of 95¢. It was subsequently reprinted as book number P2555 for $1.25. And then it was reprinted again as book number Q2910 for $1.50.

The P2555 and Q2910 editions look nearly identical to M2047 apart from the serial number and price. The publication dates for P2555 and Q2910 are not printed inside the books, but we can infer that P2555 was released in 1975 and Q2910 was released in 1976 based on the surrounding book numbers whose publication dates are known. Unfortunately, Fawcett stopped including month and year dates inside their books in late 1976, and didn't start including them again until October 1979 (the final month of the "pre-Coventry" line) so a precise timeline of release dates is difficult to establish.  Every printing published between Feb. 1974 and Oct. 1979 which was assigned a new serial number has its own separate entry in the index below.

What makes indexing this line even more difficult, however, is that some of these "pre-Coventry" novels had 2nd and 3rd printings during the 1974-1979 period without a change in serial number or price to distinguish them from the 1st printing.  We know that they are 2nd or 3rd printings by the omission of the "1" (or the "1" and "2" for 3rd printings) from the number-line on the copyright page inside the book. There may be other (very) subtle differences between the printings, such as the omission of the original printing's month and year from the copyright page, additions to the list of other (later) titles by the same author, or a different advertisement page at the back of the book.  These various subtle reprintings are not shown in this index (I'm not that obsessed, honestly) -- although if I'm aware of another printing with the same book number as the one shown, I'll mention it.

The index of the "pre-Coventry" books is organized as follows:

First is the alphabetical list of titles, which shows the covers of each book, along with publication details.  (Titles that begin with “A,” “An” or “The” are arranged under the next word that follows. For example, The Admiral's Lady is listed under A, not T.)

Each edition of each book has its own entry below, with the information about them sectioned into several lines such as "Date," "Copyright," "Book number," etc.

- The "Date" is the publication date as printed inside the book. (This is not to be confused with the Copyright date, since the book could have been written and copyrighted a different year than when it was actually published.)  Keep in mind that the book actually may have been available in stores a month or two prior to the month of publication that is listed inside the book. If the publication date isn't printed in the book, then "None listed" is noted here, with any otherwise known or assumed publication date appearing in brackets.

- The "Copyright" is the copyright date and copyright owner as listed inside the book (usually the same name as the author, but not always).

- "Publication date per CCE" is the release date shown for the book in The Catalog of Copyright Entries. If the book is not listed there (or not found), then "N/A" appears in that space. The CCE seems to be the most accurate source for release dates and usually has priority over conflicting dates in this index. Release dates given by other sources appears in the "Notes" at the bottom of each entry.

- "Book number" refers to the publisher's serial number for that particular edition as shown on the front cover of the book.

- The "ISBN number" refers to the 10-digit number that identifies each book. (These days ISBN numbers are 13 digits, but not back in the 1970s. These older versions of the ISBN are referred to as "ISBN10" on sites like Goodreads.) The "449" at the beginning of the ISBN number is the publisher code for Fawcett Crest, and is the same on all of their books. The last six numbers of the ISBN are the same as the "book number" mentioned above. Prior to 1977, Fawcett had a very similar but different type of numbering system on the spines of their books, so for those books I have included the "Spine number" as well as the ISBN (when known). Incidentally, none of the books that appear below had a barcode printed on them, since Fawcett did not use them until after October 1979.

- The "Era" refers to the historical setting of the novel as listed on the cover of the book. (These were most frequently Regency novels, though not always.)  For the novels that were described as simply "Historical Romance," a more specific era is provided in brackets, when known.

- The number of "Pages" in the book refers to all interior pages, not just those which contain text. When advertisements for other Fawcett books appear at the back of the book, that is noted here and included in the book's total number of "Pages." The majority of the books in this list were only 224 pages, typical of a traditional category romance, although a few of the novels listed here exceeded that limit by a few dozen pages.

- The "original cover price" refers to the price of the book as printed on the front cover. Generally the books began in 1974 with a 95¢ price, which was then raised to $1.25 by 1975, then to $1.50 in 1976, and finally $1.75 in 1978.  This information can be useful in easily distinguishing between different editions of the same novel, as their covers may look identical with the exception of a higher price for a later printing.

- The "Dedication" quotes any dedication that the author might have included at the beginning of the book.  If no "Dedication" line appears below, then no dedication was printed in the Fawcett edition.  These dedications can be useful in providing personal insight about the author, since family and friends are usually mentioned. They also demonstrate that these novels were often crafted with intention and care, contrary to their reputation among critics who may dismiss them as ephemeral material.

- The "cover artist" line provides the name of the artist who painted the front cover illustration, when known.  The majority of the covers were painted by Allan Kass, though not all. Sometimes the artist was credited on the back cover -- although in the case of Kass, his first name was spelled Alan in those credits. (I have ignored Fawcett's misspelling of his name in this index.) The signature of the artist may also be visible on some covers. The "Allan Kass, Illustrator of Book Covers" blog is also a major source for identifying his work. Other artists who painted covers for the line include Elaine Gignilliat, Kay Kane (wife of artist Morgan Kane), Lou Marchetti and Walter Popp.

- The "cover image source" refers to where the cover image shown in this post was obtained.  96 of the covers below are scans that I made from the books in my collection. For books and editions that I don't own, I looked online for the best-looking images of the covers that I could find (and usually did some quick photo-editing to improve them). Unfortunately there are some editions where I have been unable to find a cover image, and that is shown in the index by an "Image Not Available" icon.

- Additional information is located in a general "Note" at the end of the entry. This usually includes details about where the book originally appeared (if it was a reprint of another publisher's book) or possible release dates according to websites like ISBN SearchFictionDB and Goodreads. Goodreads usually shows the books being released on the 12th day of each month, which sounds unlikely, but I have included that info here anyway, just in case. (However, if the site shows a date that seems to me an obvious error or way off-base, then I simply ignore it instead of sharing the error here.)

This index is best viewed in desktop mode due to the placement of images. I have the covers of reissues located on the right side of the screen to make it easier to see at a glance which books are reissues. As noted previously, only editions or reissues published between Feb. 1974 and Oct. 1979 are included here. If the book got reissued again after Oct. 1979, that later printing is not shown.

At the end of this blog post, after the alphabetical list of titles, you can find a simplified chronological listing of the same titles. Because Fawcett did not list publication months inside their books at all for the 1977-1978 period, this attempt at a chronological list will rely on listing them in numerical order according to the "book number" on the cover of each edition.

If you find any errors or omissions in this post, please let me know in the comments section below. This post will be updated as more information becomes available. The most recent update to this post was on June 10, 2026.

Based on the book's numerical proximity to Q2934, which two sites claim to be a March 1976 release, a similar date for this book sounds logical. However based on its 02910 number and $1.50 price, a release date in July or August seems more likely to me.

The book number appears to be way out of sequence for a Nov. 1978 release, which would be more likely in the 2-3670 to 2-3770 range. The book's 2-3220 number puts it more in the June-July 1977 period.

Previous Fawcett Crest books by Thorpe at the time of this (reissued) book's release (as listed on interior page) were Romantic Lady, The Reluctant Adventuress, The Silver Nightingale, The Scandalous Lady Robin, The Scarlet Domino and The Scapegrace
An eBay auction for a later printing of the book, with the same P2626 book number, shows nine previous Thorpe titles listed instead of six (Captain Gallant, The Sword and the Shadow and Tarrington Chase are added to the list). (No month given inside the book.)  The cover illustration on the Walker hardcover is the same one used for the Fawcett paperback. A Large Print hardcover edition of the novel was published by G. K. Hall & Co. in 1979.
The Fawcett edition published on Sept. 12, 1979 according to Goodreads page.
This was the final novel by Joan Smith to be published by Fawcett prior to the introduction of the Coventry Romances line in November 1979. She would have 18 more novels published in the Coventry line, five of those under the pen-name Jennie Gallant. After the demise of the Coventry line in 1982, she would continue to write regularly for Fawcett's traditional Regency line until its eventual cancellation in late 1998.

An eBay auction showed a photo of an interior page of this Q2843 edition as a 3rd printing on its copyright page (indicated by the absence of the 1 and 2 in the number line) and omitting the "May 1976" publication date. However I have had in my possession two copies of Q2843 which were both 1st printings (since the 1 and 2 were present in the number line). This suggests that there were 1st, 2nd and even 3rd printings of the novel using the same serial number.
This Fawcett paperback has more than one edition; see below.

Note: Fawcett published other novels by Georgette Heyer in the 1970s, but as far as I know this edition was the only one that had the same white-bordered cover design as the "pre-Coventry" books, hence its inclusion here.
An Amazon page lists the release date of this Fawcett edition as May 1, 1979. Goodreads and another Amazon page has the release date as January 12, 1980, which seems too late. The International Heyer Society website has a release date of 1979.

The Fawcett edition published on April 12, 1979 according to Goodreads page, and in April 1979 according to ISBN Search site.
The cover lacks the line's usual design trappings like the small crown symbol and curved lines above the illustration. As a result, this book could be seen as a single-title Sylvia Thorpe novel (like Fair Shine the Day) despite having the familiar white border of the "pre-Coventry" line.

RELATED BOOKS:
During the same period as the "pre-Coventry" line indexed above, Fawcett Crest published a few single-title historical romance novels by authors who wrote for the line, but these particular books were not part of the line.  For the sake of completeness, they are listed below. (Note that I'm not including the various Georgette Heyer books that Fawcett published. Joan Smith's Flowers of Eden is also not shown here since it was published in December 1979, during the Coventry Romances era, and therefore outside the scope of this index.)

FAWCETT CREST titles (in numerical order):
The numerical order below does not necessarily indicate a strict chronological release order, but is a general indicator of the time frame when the book came out. Given the lack of hard information about when most of the books were released, trying to list them all in perfect sequential order will result in some anomalies. (It's also possible that some of the books were actually released out of order for some unknown reason.)

Dates that appear in parentheses are the month and year as printed inside the book itself.

Dates that appear in brackets are based on online sources (or, in a few cases, deductions I've made based on the dates of surrounding books). Dates as listed in The Catalog of Copyright Entries are not accompanied by a question mark. If no CCE date is available, then instead I have used the most-likely date that I found on websites such as FictionDB, Goodreads and ISBN Search -- which are accompanied by a question mark (to distinguish them from the CCE dates).

I have added a parenthetical "actually" to several titles if I think the Goodreads, etc. date may be wrong -- offering my own suggestion (also accompanied by a question mark) for a more likely date instead. Since my "actually" is purely conjecture, however, I have not included most of those dating suggestions in the main index above.

The four "related" books listed above, plus Flowers of Eden by Joan Smith, appear below in brackets and italics.
