On June 14, 2026, I learned that Tripod has permanently closed their websites.
They actually closed down back in April, although I didn't find out until June when a reader of one of my old Tripod pages emailed me about it. I had noticed that my old Tripod site was down in recent months, but I just figured it was Tripod being glitchy like usual.
I hadn't uploaded new material to my Tripod site in many years, having moved most of my stuff to Weebly (another free site) during the past ten years, as well as using this blog and Facebook instead for whenever I want to share information. (Obviously, the more long-form stuff tends to get posted here on the blog.)
Fortunately, nearly everything that I had on my old Tripod site was at some point saved to the Wayback Machine, so that it can be accessed now. An exception is the "C to D" page of my EQMM Author Index, which was not saved at any time, even though it had been on my Tripod site since 2001. The other pages in the EQMM Index did get saved there, but not that particular page for some reason.
I do have the info that was on the "C to D" page saved in a Word document on a hard drive, though, so it can be recreated and posted elsewhere. I've already begun work on updating my EQMM Author Index pages into one big post on my blog instead. Stay tuned for that.
At least when Geocities closed in 2009, we were given more time to save our pages and transition to other free websites. Back then, I was actually using both Geocities and Tripod as my main homepage, in order to get the most out of the limited free megabytes they allowed users to have on their site. So, I'd have the main page on Geocities, but then the links on it would go to both Geocities and Tripod sites. Eventually I had to transition all the Geocities stuff to Tripod before it closed.
Funnily enough, I have mixed feelings about some of my Tripod site's material being preserved forever. I had the opportunity at any time over the past several years to save all of it on the Wayback Machine, but rarely ever did so. I kept an online "journal" back then which functioned as a way of saving posts I had written on message boards back in 1997 to 2002. Those old message board posts disappeared eventually, so the copies I'd made on my Tripod site were the only places to see them.
But in this new modern world, it seems less wise to put too much of your life out there for public consumption (not that I ever talked all that much about my life online, aside from my hobbies and interests, of course). Public conversations somehow felt more private back in the message board days of the late 1990s and early 2000s when you were interacting with others who shared your interests. Now anybody can just Google your name and stuff you wrote will show up in the search results.
So I think that I didn't save on the Wayback Machine any of my "journal" pages for that reason -- even though I valued those posts for their history, etc. Fortunately it looks like all of those journal entries were saved, so they are not lost.
It looks like the only "lost" items from my old webpage are the aforementioned "C to D" EQMM Author Index (which isn't truly lost, just not available online at the moment, and will be reposted here eventually), as well as a few posts that had originally been posted on Geocities but evidently never got transferred over to my Tripod page and weren't saved. These include my page about General Hospital from 2004-2005 (where I detailed what episodes I had taped off TV) and the last two pages of an article I wrote about attending the "Spirit Song" concert festival in July 2003. (The first page of that article was saved -- included below in the "Music" section -- but the other two pages are lost.)
