A guide to Doctor Who episodes on YouTube

The following is a list of Doctor Who stories that are available to watch in their entirety on the official Doctor Who Classic YouTube channel.  (We know that it's an official channel because a few of the same stories were also uploaded to the main Doctor Who channel later, using the same title wording. The videos also have a BBC icon in the corner, presumably to act as a watermark preventing unauthorized copying for resale.)

     Doctor Who is a British science fiction TV series that aired from 1963 to 1989 (this era is usually referred to as "classic Doctor Who").  After a TV special in 1996, the series was revived in 2005 and has been on the air ever since.  This list contains only the episodes that aired from 1963 to 1989.  Back then, each story was usually segmented into half-hour episodes.  Most of the stories were four episodes long, although several were six episodes, and a few were even longer than that. Each YouTube video linked below contains the entire story, with all of its individual episodes, within a single video.

     If you want more information about the series, I wrote a blog post in 2015 where I listed my favorite episodes of the series as follows (listed chronologically). Note that these days I would probably replace "The End of the World" on my top 10 list with "The Five Doctors" (1983).

     I have created the list below for easy access to all of the stories that have been uploaded so far, in chronological order.  Although it may be tempting to watch the series from beginning to end, I recommend that new viewers watch the more well-regarded episodes first, or perhaps start watching from a particular Doctor's era. (Whenever an actor left the role of the Doctor, the character was "regenerated" to explain his changed appearance.) 

     It is not necessary to start watching the series from the first episode in 1963, since some of the show's concepts didn't develop until many years later.  Some modern viewers may find the older episodes to be too slow-moving and hard to watch. Personally I recommend new viewers start with "Spearhead from Space" (1970), the first story to be filmed in color.  (It was also the first story to be uploaded by the channel.)

      Click the story title below to watch the episode on YouTube.  Click the "wiki" link next to the story title to read more information about that particular story on its Wikipedia page.  A number in brackets appears after the "wiki" link; that number shows in what order the favorite stories of each Doctor were ranked in a 2023 Doctor Who Magazine survey. (Each Doctor's stories were ranked separately from each other.)  So, if you just want to sample the best stories of each Doctor, just watch the highest-ranked ones.  Keep in mind, however, that those rankings are subjective, and just because Doctor Who fandom judges a story to be a particular Doctor's worst story doesn't mean that you will think the same.  Personally I quite enjoy a few of those lower-ranked stories!

     You will notice that some of the videos below are animated, rather than live-action. These are modern attempts at reconstructing the 1960s episodes for which no video or film has survived. Thankfully the audio for all of these missing episodes was saved, and this original audio has been combined with new animation so that these episodes can be watched today. The episodes that have missing episodes are noted below. My 2024 YouTube videos (in order of popularity)

In 2024, I uploaded a total of 44 videos to my YouTube channel, ranging in length from 3 minutes to 32 minutes.  I've arranged the list of them below according to how many views that they have received so far (as of December 31, 2024), from highest number of views to lowest.

     In January and February 2024, I didn't upload any videos at all.  I uploaded three videos in March, two in April, and only one in May.  So, five months into 2024, I had uploaded a total of only six videos.  In June I decided to pick up the pace a bit, and began adding videos more regularly to the channel.  

     Most of the videos that I uploaded this year were reviews of brand-new comic books that I had bought, since I had recently begun buying new comics regularly again.  I decided to "brand" the videos with the word "New review" at the beginning of each video's title, made a playlist for them, and created similar-looking thumbnail images to accompany each of these review videos.  Once I got in the habit of doing that, it became easier to do more videos.

     In past years I have done a lot of videos about various topics that interest me at the moment -- topics that are barely represented among this year's videos (such as my ongoing "My Romance Novel Collection," which didn't see an episode in 2024 since I didn't acquire any novels during the year that I felt warranted a video about them).  

     I didn't bother doing a list like this in 2023 because that year I only uploaded around 13 videos during the entire year.  The year before, however, I had uploaded 50 videos -- some of them over two hours long -- and compiled a list ranking their views that you can read here.  Their viewing numbers are more impressive than subsequent years' views have been.

     Anyway, with that introduction out of the way, here's the list.  The bolded phrase is the title of the video, which often includes the date of the comic book's release (in bold type).  The date shown after the title, in non-bold type, is the day on which the video was posted to YouTube.  This is followed by the number of views that the video had received by the end of 2024.

My list of all of the Beatles songs ranked from best to worst

      I saw a YouTube video the other day where someone had ranked the Beatles songs into a top 100 list.  Some of the choices were pretty solid, but others seemed waaaay off base.  (For example, the person had "I Will" -- a minor McCartney ballad from the white album -- at #17, ahead of "A Day in the Life" which was at #19.)  So, I figured that I ought to try to make my own top 100 Beatles songs list.

     To begin the process, I thought that it would be best to go album by album and put each song in the order of how much I like it.  After all of the albums (and non-album songs, on singles and EPs) have had their contents ranked, then it would be easier to mix and match them from best to worst.  I did discover, however, that during the mixing and matching process, I sometimes elevated or lower a song's ranking different to how I had done when ranking the album they were on.  For example, when ranking the songs on the Please Please Me (1963) album, I had "Twist and Shout" ranked as the 4th best song on that album, but when compiling the overall list below, it became the 2nd highest place song from that album.  Go figure.

     I didn't go back and listen to any of the songs while compiling the list, relying on my memory of them.  This did cause a re-evaluation, though, when -- after completing the list -- I decided to listen to the two longest-ranked Lennon-McCartney songs: "When I Get Home" and "Little Child."  Originally I had "Little Child" as the lowest ranked of the two, but when I listened to the current remastered versions of them on YouTube, I decided that "When I Get Home" was worse, and so switched positions for them.  The harmonica solo used to be horribly edited in on my old vinyl version (at least in my memory), which had contributed to my negative opinion of that track, but it sounds OK on the remaster.  

     Obviously this is a personal ranking and other people will place some of the songs higher or lower.  Heck, even I would likely rearrange the list in the future (and may end up doing so, at some point).  One of the things that I did find difficult to rank was the shorter songs like "Dig It," "Her Majesty" and "Maggie Mae."  If I was making a mix tape for somebody, I would definitely include those songs (if there was room on the tape) since they are fun and catchy.  But how can those "throwaway" songs compare to a song that the Beatles took more seriously and spent more time working on, which I might not love as much?  For example, you can see that I've rated "Her Majesty" and "Maggie Mae" just higher than "Within You Without You" -- which I can see as being a ridiculous notion.  But the fact is that I find those two short dittys more enjoyable to listen to.  "Dig It" ranked even higher due to having clever lyrics, and the short version on the Let It Be album doesn't overstay its welcome.  (If we were to count the long, meandering version that they performed during the Get Back sessions, the song would place much, much lower!)
