Addendum to my post on facsimile reprints of pre-1990 Marvel and DC comics

Note: The following post was originally at the end of my post that indexes recent Marvel and DC facsimile edition reprints.  The post got so long that I have spun off this addendum to its own individual post.  Last updated on March 18, 2024.

ADDENDUM

There have been other facsimile editions (or reprints including the original covers) in the past, although usually lacking the original ads and editorial matter (letter pages, etc.).   Listed below are previous DC and Marvel reprints that may eventually be the subject of future facsimile editions. (If that happens, the info below about that issue will be removed and moved to the list above.)

In my judgement, the recent facsimile reprints since 2019 have generally been superior to all previous attempts. (To clarify, I'm referring here only to those in the regular periodical format and not reprints in trade paperback or hardcover book format, which are outside the scope of this blog post.)

I have noted below an enormous amount of comics that have been reprinted in past decades in other, less-faithful editions (such as the Marvel Milestone Editions of the 1990s or DC's Millennium Editions).  Marvel also reprinted many classic issues in their dollar-comic series True Believers in recent years, although they do not include the original ads.

To clarify, though, this is not a list of everything that DC and Marvel have ever reprinted over the years. This list does not include books reprinting comic book issues, nor periodicals published at smaller than standard comics size (therefore no digests or mini-comics).  It is also limited to U.S. publications, not foreign editions of the same material. I have been somewhat selective in my decisions about what reprints to acknowledge since, after all, I compiled this list for my own benefit, to keep track of the various releases I might encounter whilst digging through a back-issue box or browsing the new releases shelves.  However, if you spot a glaring omission, feel free to mention the issue in the comments section, and I may add it to the list.

DC 1970s REPRINTS:
In the 1960s, DC reprinted older stories in Annuals or 80-Page Giants (including "Giant" issues within the run of a regular series).  An early all-reprint DC series was From Beyond the Unknown, launched in 1969, which reprinted old stories from DC's science fiction anthology comics.  In 1971, DC's regular titles increased their page count (with a 25-cent cover price) and usually filled out the last third of each issue with reprints.  When this format was discontinued in 1972, occasional "100-Page Super Spectacular" issues would appear periodically within a regular series, consisting mostly of reprinted material inside.
In the mid-1970s, DC began publishing new all-reprint anthology series, such as Four Star Battle TalesFour Star SpectacularSecret Origins, and Wanted: The World's Most Dangerous Villains.  There were also series that contained both new and reprinted stories, such as DC SpecialDC Super StarsSuper-Team FamilyTarzan Family, and (at least initially) Batman Family and Superman Family. Older stories were also featured in the treasury-size Limited Collectors' Edition series, devoted to a particular character or theme, such as #c-51 which reprinted the early appearances of Ra's al Ghul from Batman #232, 242-244, with a new wraparound cover by Neal Adams.
Some other noteworthy reprints are listed below:

Black Magic #1-9 (1973-1975) reprinted various Black Magic stories from 1950-1954 by the Simon & Kirby studio (GCD)

Boy Commandos #1-2 (1973) reprinted various Boy Commandos stories from 1942-1944 by Simon & Kirby (GCD)

Challengers of the Unknown #75-80 (1970-1971, 1973) reprinted earlier stories drawn by Jack Kirby (GCD)

DC Special #15 (1971) reprinted various Plastic Man stories from 1941-1950 (GCD)

DC Special Series #2, 14, 17 & 20 (1977-1980) reprinted Swamp Thing #1-10 (1972-1974) (GCD)

Doom Patrol #122-124 (1973) reprinted stories from Doom Patrol #89-90, 95 (1964-1965) (GCD)

Legion of Super-Heroes #1-4 (1973) reprinted Legion stories from Adventure Comics #328, 333, 340-341 (1965-1966) with 1950s Tommy Tomorrow backup stories (GCD)

Metal Men #42-44 (1973) reprints Metal Men #1 (1963), #14 (1965) and Showcase #39 (1962) with a few pages edited out (GCD)

Super DC Giant #S-25 (1971) reprinted various Challengers of the Unknown stories from 1958-1959, drawn by Jack Kirby and Wally Wood (GCD)

Tor #2-6 (1975-1976) reprinted stories from One Million Years Ago #1 (St. John, 1953), 3-D Comics #2 (St. John, 1953)  and Tor #3-5 (St. John, 1954) with some edits and new covers by Joe Kubert (GCD)

As with Marvel's 1970s reprints (which we will discuss later), there was little attempt made to replicate the appearance of the original comic book, i.e. to be a true facsimile edition. This was especially the case at DC, where stories were often shorter than at Marvel, resulting in reprint comics containing stories from multiple issues rather than a single one. Actual facsimile editions were published by DC in the 1970s, however, and they are noted here:

FAMOUS FIRST EDITIONS (1974-1979):
The treasury-size Famous First Edition series reprinted comic books in true facsimile fashion, including their original covers and ads, in recognition of their historic importance and growing monetary value among collectors.  There were only nine comics reprinted, and they are listed here alphabetically.  The issues that have recently been published as facsimile editions are preceded by an asterick below. (I recommend the more recent facsimile editions as being more faithful representations of the original comics, however, despite their smaller size.)

* Action Comics #1 (June 1938) (GCD)
* All Star Comics #3 (Winter 1940) (GCD)
* Batman #1 (Spring 1940) (GCD)

DC BAXTER REPRINTS (1980s):
In the 1980s, both Marvel and DC published one-shots and mini-series aimed at the fan market, available only at comics shops, printed on high-quality Baxter paper and reprinting issues drawn by fan-favorite artists like Neal Adams.  New covers and interior material was sometimes added to them and one issue might be spread across two issues in order to make it fit the page count.  The comics used modern coloring rather than attempting to duplicate the look of the original issues. The original covers were often reprinted on an interior page. Below are some examples:

- Best of the Brave and the Bold #1-6 (1988-1989) reprinted stories from The Brave and the Bold #1-9, 11-12, 14 (1955-1957), #80-83, 85, 93 (1968-1971) (GCD)

- Deadman #1-7 (1985) reprinted Deadman stories from Strange Adventures #205-216 (1967-1969) and Brave and the Bold #79 & 86 (1968-1969), and [as backup filler] non-Deadman tales from House of Mystery #178 (1969), House of Secrets #85 (1970) and The Witching Hour #8 (1970) (GCD)

- Green Lantern/Green Arrow #1-7 (1983-1984) reprinted stories from GL/GA #76-87, 89 (1970-1972) and The Flash #217-219 (1972-1973) (GCD)

- Immortal Doctor Fate #1-3 (1985) reprinted Dr. Fate stories from More Fun Comics #56 (1940), 1st Issue Special #9 (1975), DC Special Series #10 (1978) and The Flash #306-313 (1982) (GCD)

- Roots of the Swamp Thing #1-5 (1986) reprinted Swamp Thing #1-10 (1972-1974) (GCD)

- Saga of Ra's Al Ghul #1-4 (1988) reprinted stories from Batman #232, 235, 240, 242-245 (1971-1972), Detective Comics #395, 410-411 (1970-1971), House of Mystery #179 (1969) and Weird Western Tales #13 (1972) (GCD)

- Shadow of the Batman #1-5 (1985-1986) reprinted stories from Detective Comics #469-479 (1977-1978) and [as backup filler] non-Batman stories from House of Mystery #254 (1977), #274 (1979), Mystery in Space #111 (1980) and Weird War Tales #51-52 (1977) (GCD)

- Wrath of the Spectre #1-4 (1988) reprinted Spectre stories from Adventure Comics #431-440 (1974-1975); the final issue (#4) consists of newly-drawn pages by Jim Aparo pages of unpublished 1970s Spectre scripts by Michael Fleisher (GCD)

DC SILVER AGE CLASSICS (1992):
Ten issues were published in this series and they do not contain the original ads.  All of these issues were also later reprinted in the Millennium Edition series (see next entry below) with the exception of Sugar and Spike #99, which was a new comic.  The issues that have recently been published as facsimile editions, including the original ads (hence making these earlier reprints redundant and less desirable) are preceded by an asterick below:

MARVEL 1970s REPRINTS:
In the mid-1960s, Marvel began reprinting the early 1960s stories of their superhero comics in thick anthologies like Marvel Tales and Marvel Collectors' Item Classics (later renamed Marvel's Greatest Comics).  With the 1972 cover-dated issues, these series (along with another title, Marvel Super-Heroes, formerly Fantasy Masterpieces) switched to the regular 36-page format (counting covers) and would reprint only one old issue (instead of two or more, as had been the case in the previous thicker format).  Many more reprint series were added, allowing new readers to experience those older comics -- even if they were not exact duplications, containing editing and other alterations, and of course did not contain the original ads or editorial material (letter pages, etc.).

At first the original cover would sometimes be shown on an interior page, but by early 1975, the page counts in Marvel comics were reduced to 17 or 18 pages, thus requiring the elimination of two or three pages from a 20-page story.  For this reason, these 1970s reprints are no longer recommended for readers wanting to acquire affordable alternatives to the originals.  (As time goes on, these 1970s issues have themselves become "vintage" items, increasing their value.)  In their defense,  they may seem more like the originals than later reprints since they are also printed on newsprint with similarly muted colors.

In 1980, beginning with the November cover-dated issues, Marvel's page counts increased to 22 to 23 pages, allowing for the addition of short backup strips.  By then, however, Marvel had begun phasing out their ongoing reprint series, with only Marvel Tales (reprinting Spider-Man comics) remaining by 1982. (It was finally cancelled in 1994.)

Numerous 1950s-70s stories were reprinted in these old reprint series (as well as within non-reprint titles as backup filler stories or as last-minute replacements when deadlines were missed) and perhaps they will be the subject of a future blog post.  For now, however, I generally recommend sticking with the more recent reprints of the same material.  With that said, here are some examples that may be worth checking out:

Amazing Adventures #1-14 (1979-1981) reprinted X-Men #1-8 (1963-1964) with edits and the stories spread across two issues (except for the last two issues). (GCD) For that reason this series would not be recommended, except for the fact that it also reprinted the solo X-Men backup stories from X-Men #38-48.

Giant-Size Avengers #5 (1975) reprinted Avengers Annual #1 (1967) minus a few 1-or-2-page extras. (GCD

Giant-Size Captain America #1 (1975) reprinted the Cap stories from Tales of Suspense #59-63 (1964-1965) minus the original covers. (GCD)

Giant-Size Daredevil #1 (1975) reprinted Daredevil Annual #1 (1967) with a new cover, and minus a few 1-page extras. (GCD

Giant-Size Fantastic Four #2-4 (1974-1975) reprinted FF #13, 21 & 28 (1963-1964) as backups, minus the original covers. (GCD)
Giant-Size Fantastic Four #5 (May 1975) reprinted the lead story from FF Annual #5 (Nov. 1967). (GCD)

Giant-Size Hulk #1 (1975) reprinted Hulk King-Size Special [Annual] #1 (Oct. 1968) with a new cover and minus a couple 1-page items. (GCD)

Giant-Size Kid Colt #1 (Jan. 1975) reprinted Kid Colt #52 (Sept. 1955) minus the original cover (GCD

Giant-Size Marvel Triple Action #1-2 (1975) reprinted Avengers #31-32 (1966), Daredevil #20-21 (1966) and the Dr. Strange stories from Strange Tales #122-123 (1964).  These two Giant-Size issues appeared when the regular MTA series was on hiatus, between #24 and #25. (GCD)

Giant-Size Master of Kung Fu #1-4 (1974-1975) reprinted stories from The Yellow Claw #1-2 (1956) as backup stories, in edited form (GCD)

The Human Torch #1-8 (1974-1975) reprinted the Torch stories from Strange Tales #101-108 (with new covers). Backup stories were from The Human Torch #30, 33 (1948), #38 (1954), Sub-Mariner #23 (1947) & #35 (1954), and Marvel Super-Heroes #16 (1968), with some edits. (GCD)

MARVEL SPECIAL EDITIONS (1980s):
In the early 1980s, both Marvel and DC published one-shots and mini-series aimed at the fan market, available only at comics shops, printed on high-quality Baxter paper and reprinting issues drawn by fan-favorite artists like Neal Adams. New covers and interior material was sometimes added to them and one issue might be spread across two issues in order to make it fit the page count.  The comics used modern coloring rather than attempting to duplicate the look of the original issues. The original covers were often reprinted on an interior page. These 1980s Baxter releases include the following:

And finally, just to wrap this up, I realize that there have been many reprint comics over the years that are worth acquiring that aren't listed above.  Some of them may be reprinting various short stories from multiple issues (like, say, Curse of the Weird and the Jack Kirby Omnibus Sampler) and therefore don't really fit the topic of facsimile reprints.  Who knows, perhaps they will be the subject of a future post someday. In the meantime, I hope that you find this current post to be useful, and I will try to update it regularly whenever DC and Marvel release more facsimile editions. Thanks for reading!
